LIKE POLES: Musings Of Joke Jagun

By Kolapo Olapoju

“I wrote this beautiful piece about my Maternal Aunt years ago, but today, I’ve finally found the courage to share it with the world. She was an important part of my development, and I cherish her beyond words.”
Enjoy!

We were too much alike,
We were ‘like poles’
We could never gel
You are part vain, part hermit.
You were the life of the party,
Yet the first to depart
Now that I’m at the age of maturity,
And I’ve begun to tread in some of your steps
I see you in a different light
I understand your words and deeds
Though I don’t totally empathize
I apathize.

What a life we both have
What great gifts we’ve been bestowed
You yearned love like I desired it
But lacked it as I still do
We both came close
Maybe you’ve gotten closer now
I’d never know
We are worlds apart
With words unsaid.
Do the crowds still linger,
Or have you outgrown them
Like I’m learning to do.

Were we ever completely alike?
No!
The creator is too wise for that
Don’t you just marvel at the uniqueness of every individual?
The sculptor of our beings, performing wonders with humans

Where are you now?
At fulfillment lane?
Or still en route like me?
Though I’d pick the former.
Many think we have grudges,
But I bear none
Life had to happen
My fate is not your making
Considering your feminism,
You might carry one or two.
But, who am I to complain
I’m all round chauvinistic
Why can’t the female have her pettiness?

Pardon my deviation,
It makes for a better tale
Now, these are not queries.
This is just me musing
Like I do everyday
But this dawn
I’m sharing it with the world
